Amoxiclav, international non-proprietary name: Amoxicillin, Clavulanic acid
Composition of Amoxiclav
Active ingredient: Each tablet contains 500 mg amoxicillin (as trihydrate) and 125 mg clavulanic acid (as potassium salt).
Indications for use
Amoxiclav is indicated in adults and children for the treatment of the following infections:
– Infections of the upper respiratory tract: sinusitis, otitis media, tonsillitis
– Infections of the lower respiratory tract: exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, pneumonia
– Infections of the genitourinary tract: cystitis, urethritis, pyelonephritis, infections of the female genital organs
– Infections of the skin and soft tissues: cellulitis, bite wounds, abscesses
– Infections of bones and joints: osteomyelitis
– Odontogenic infections and mixed infections: periodontitis, cellulitis, sepsis, etc.
Contraindications
High sensitivity to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or other beta-lactam antibiotics; history of anaphylactic reactions to these preparations; liver damage and/or jaundice with amoxicillin/clavulanic acid; severe liver and kidney failure.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
During pregnancy, it is used only in important cases. It may be used during lactation, but diarrhea and fungal infection may develop in the child. Both components pass into breast milk.
Use in pediatrics
In children with body weight less than 40 kg, suspension or another suitable dosage form is recommended. In children under 6 years of age, suspension is preferred. There is no clinical information on the use in children under 2 years of age at a dose of 40 mg/10 mg/kg/day.
Effect on the ability to drive vehicles and operate other potentially dangerous machinery
It is not recommended to drive vehicles or work with other machinery in cases such as dizziness, seizures, and allergic reactions.
How to take Amoxiclav
Tablets should be taken before meals.
Adults and children over 40 kg: 1 tablet 3 times a day.
In patients with impaired kidney function, the dose should be adjusted.
Creatinine clearance:
– 10–30 ml/min – 1 tablet 2 times a day
– <10 ml/min – 1 tablet 1 time a day
– Hemodialysis – 1 tablet every 24 hours + an additional dose during dialysis and after it
Recommended maximum duration of therapy: 14 days. Liver function should be monitored regularly.
